Italy Itinerary

We spent a total of about two weeks in Italy, starting in the northeast in Venice, driving down through Tuscany and ending up in Rome.

  • 3 nights in Venice — just right

  • 1 night in Florence — two would have been better

  • 5 nights in central Tuscany — just right; with some relaxing pool time built in, could even do six or seven if you have the time

  • 2 nights in the cliff-top village of Civita Di Bagnoregio — one would also be fine

  • 4 nights in Rome — enough, but could have easily done five — and we’ll be back for more!

GT Tips on Driving in Italy:

  • If picking up or dropping off a car in Venice, do so by the train station right by the bridge out of the city

  • You will definitely need a car to get around the hill towns and cities of Tuscany

  • Be careful and read up on limited traffic zones in Italy (specifically in larger towns like Florence and Siena where you will be ticketed if you accidentally end up in the center). Park on the outskirts of the old town. We got a ticket from Siena when we got home to NYC!

  • No car is needed in Rome either. We dropped our rental car off on the outside of the city center and then took an Uber to our hotel.
